Message from the Boundary Committee

On Wednesday, April 6, 2011, the Nebo School Board of Education voted to finalize the changes to the elementary school boundaries within the district. As part of those changes, a population of approximately 190 students from Mapleton Elementary School will now fall within the boundaries for the newly built Sierra Bonita Elementary School, which opens this fall and is located adjacent to Maple Mountain High School to the West.

The neighborhood areas from Mapleton Elementary’s current boundaries that are now within the boundaries of Sierra Bonita for the 2011-2012 school year and in the future are: Harvest Park, Valley View Estates, Park Meadows, Monte Vista, Triple Crown, Perry’s Hollow, and the Preserve. In short, all neighborhoods and families that are South of 1600 South (all the way East up to the bench of Maple Mountain), as well as Harvest Park, will now attend Sierra Bonita Elementary School.

The School Board has expressed the hope that parents will accept the final decision and have their children attend the schools where they have been assigned.

However, they have also extended the Early Open Enrollment deadline to Friday, April 22 at 5:00 p.m. Under the Open Enrollment provision, a graduated adjustment will be applied to Mapleton Elementary for those who complete and submit an Early Open Enrollment form to Nebo School District by the deadline. This means that any family that currently has children attending Mapleton Elementary School (in grades K-6) but is now within the newly created boundaries for Sierra Bonita, may continue to have their children attend Mapleton Elementary. Younger siblings of students attending Mapleton Elementary can begin kindergarten at Mapleton Elementary as long as there is an older sibling attending grade K-6 the same school year that the younger sibling is designated to begin kindergarten. They can continue to attend the school until the youngest sibling finishes 6th grade.

Busing will only be provided to the school for which the children are boundaried. Families will need to provide their own transportation if they choose to attend Mapleton Elementary under Open Enrollment. However, those families now within Sierra Bonita’s new boundaries in which the oldest child will be starting as a kindergartner in the fall must attend Sierra Bonita and anyone moving into the new boundaries for Sierra Bonita will be required to attend the new school.

To apply for the graduated adjustment under Early Open Enrollment:

•  Forms and instructions can be found online at www.nebo.edu or at the District Office
•  Fill out a separate Early Open Enrollment form for each child you desire to attend Mapleton Elementary
• Only the first page of the form is required, no additional documentation is necessary (page 2 of the form does not have to be submitted)
• Reason for Early Open Enrollment request is “graduated adjustment”
• No fee will be charged
• Forms must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, April 22 to the Nebo School District Office located at 350 South Main Street, Spanish Fork.
